Inspired by a night spent in the heart of Iceland’s lava fields, this painting captures the breathtaking moment of sunrise behind a striking volcanic crater. The snow created very distinctive stripes down the side of the crater making it stand out against the landscape. Having hiked around its ridge, I wanted to preserve the memory of its unique shape and the quiet, otherworldly beauty of this frozen terrain.

I wanted to capture that sense of weightlessness, where the clouds seem to merge with the snow-covered peaks, and the sky stretches endlessly in every direction. The figure, bundled against the cold, stands at the edge of this dreamlike landscape, surrounded by deep blues, icy whites, and fiery oranges that bring both warmth and isolation to the scene. It’s about adventure, solitude, and the surreal beauty of standing above the world.
